Gauteng police have made a shocking arrest in the murder case of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, whose body was discovered earlier this year at a residential complex in Fleurhof. A 31-year-old woman, believed to be a close family member of the victim, was taken into custody on Friday in connection with the brutal killing.
A Community in Shock
Jayden-Lee’s lifeless body was found on a staircase in the apartment building where he lived, half-naked and bearing visible bruises. The Grade 4 pupil had last been seen after being dropped off by his school transport but never arrived home. His body was discovered the following day by a resident, sparking widespread outrage and protests demanding justice.
In a disturbing twist, the arrested suspect had reportedly participated in public demonstrations calling for answers in Jayden-Lee’s death—a revelation that has left the community reeling.
Police Defend Investigation Amid Criticism
Authorities faced heavy scrutiny over their handling of the case, with some accusing them of negligence. However, police officials maintained that they remained focused on the investigation.
“We knew what we were doing,” a police representative stated. “Despite outside pressure and accusations, we remained resolute in ensuring the right suspect was arrested.”
The suspect is expected to make her first court appearance next week. Meanwhile, Jayden-Lee was laid to rest at West Park Cemetery in May, with media barred from covering the funeral proceedings.
As the case moves forward, many are left questioning the motive behind the killing—and how someone close to the child could be implicated in such a horrific crime.
