Boeremag prisoner gets doctorate

Die Vryburger

It is seldom that prisoners receive a doctorate while studying in prison, but that’s exactly what happened to 39-year-old Wilhelm Pretorius, who is currently serving 25 years in jail in connection with the alleged Boeremag case.

Pretorius’s unique achievement was clouded by the Department of Correctional Services (DKD)’s refusal to attend the graduation ceremony at the University of Pretoria, and apparently also reversed when a private graduation ceremony was held in prison for Pretorius.

All arrangements were apparently in place, but when family and close relatives arrived at the jail, they had to turn around for irregularities. DKD now denies that there was such an arrangement.

Pretorius obtained his doctorate in Church History, and his dissertation deals with: “A Church-historical investigation into the development of the calendars of Easter in Christianity in the first three centuries AD”. In 2008, he obtained his master’s degree while in custody.

Meanwhile, the organization Boervin has been established and aims at the release of Boer political prisoners, including the Boeremag prisoners.
