Conflicting reports have emerged over the safety of drinking water in Bekkersdal, with recent tests detecting traces of E. coli and other pollutants, while the Rand West Local Municipality maintains that the water is safe for consumption.
Residents Report Discoloration, Unusual Taste
Community members in Bekkersdal have raised concerns over changes in water quality, particularly after recent water cuts. One resident described the water as initially clear but turning brown following service interruptions.
“Right now, the water is a bit clear, but when there’s a cut and it comes back, it’s actually brown,” said a local resident. “The water we drink is not clean. In my eyes, it doesn’t look clean.”
Others claim the water appears fine when freshly drawn but deteriorates when stored overnight. “The water is good, but when you leave it overnight, it’s not 100% good. There are small bubbles,” another resident noted.
Tests Detect Contamination, Municipality Denies Risk
Independent tests conducted by nonprofit organization WaterCAN between May and June revealed E. coli and other contaminants in tap water samples. The group uses a method where water is stored for 36 hours—discoloration indicates contamination.
“When the water changes to a dark form, it means it’s contaminated by E. coli or other particles—in simple terms, it might have traces of sewage,” a WaterCAN representative explained.
The organization has urged the Rand West Local Municipality to issue a boil-water notice, emphasizing that E. coli presence suggests either inadequate treatment or sewage leaks.
“The municipality must investigate. Citizen science can’t be dismissed,” the representative added.
However, the municipality disputes these findings. Rand West’s Water and Sanitation MMC, Dumile Sithole, denied receiving any report from WaterCAN and insisted the water is safe. To prove his point, Sithole drank a glass of tap water during an interview.
“I don’t see any way contamination could happen between the inlet valve and our high-pressure tower,” he stated.
Calls for Transparency and Action
With residents divided and test results contradicting official statements, concerns over water safety persist. WaterCAN has called for further investigation, while locals remain wary.
As the debate continues, Bekkersdal’s community waits for clarity on whether their water is truly safe—or if precautionary measures are needed.
