PRETORIA — Thousands of aviation enthusiasts are converging on Air Force Base Swartkop today as the South African Air Force hosts its annual air show, showcasing military aircraft displays, aerobatic performances, and aviation heritage exhibits.

The event offers spectators a close-up view of the country’s air power capabilities while celebrating decades of aviation history. Organizers confirmed that world-renowned commentator Brian Emmenis, alongside Capital Sounds, is providing live expert commentary and professional audio coverage to enhance the visitor experience throughout the day.

The annual showcase, which commenced yesterday, serves both as a public demonstration of the South African Air Force’s operational skills and as a recruitment platform for young citizens interested in aviation careers. Exhibits include historic aircraft, interactive displays, and live flight demonstrations.

Early attendees expressed enthusiasm for the blend of entertainment and education. One visitor highlighted the appeal of seeing “old museum pieces just flying through” and the opportunity to “take nice photos” and explore exhibitions up close. “It’s just a nice piece of history that you can come and see, come to life,” they noted, adding that the event offers “a day to get out and enjoy.”

Another enthusiast emphasized the educational value: “I want to learn everything that I can. I want to see each plane and I want to learn the history of it. Was it in the war? Was it not? Where was it? Who made it?” They described the experience as “a learning curve in a fun way.”

Among the most anticipated features is the performance of the Gripen fighter jet. “I hope the Gripen goes over,” shared one attendee. “That’s actually the one thing that I look forward to the most—the Gripen coming and doing tricks and everything.”

Organizers note the event also supports local vendors, creating a vibrant atmosphere with food stalls and family-friendly activities. With favorable weather conditions reported, the air show is expected to draw crowds throughout the day.

The South African Air Force continues to use this platform to engage the public, share its heritage, and inspire future generations of aviators and technical specialists.
