JOHANNESBURG — A violent Hillbrow protest shooting that left a 17-year-old among two people injured has led to three arrests, with the suspects now facing attempted murder charges in Johannesburg.

The incident unfolded on June 30, 2026, when demonstrators marching through the neighborhood were allegedly targeted by gunfire. Two individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, including the teenage victim.

Law enforcement reports indicate that a trio of individuals opened fire on the passing protesters. In the immediate aftermath of the ambush, the demonstrators retaliated by setting the suspects’ vehicle on fire.

Police apprehended the three alleged gunmen and recovered two licensed firearms at the scene. Authorities believe these registered weapons were utilized during the attack and have impounded them for further forensic investigation.

The arrested trio remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court in the near future to formally answer to the attempted murder charges.
