Armed man saved from suicide attempt by SAPS in Sunnyside

There was a sigh of relief last night on 6 December 2016, following a 6-hour drama after two local police officers teamed up with the SAPS Hostage Negotiators to save an armed man from a suicide attempt in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

The incident started at about 2pm when the officers received a call about a man intending to kill himself. It ended at about 8pm.
The police officers had to be on tenterhooks during a face-to-face encounter with the armed man.

The man tried to reach for a firearm that was reportedly hidden behind a chair.

Sunnyside’s Sergeant Tsholofelo Modise and Constable Vincent Mudau, teamed up with the SAPS Hostage Negotiators to wrestle a rifle out the the man’s hands.

The negotiator spent the next two to three hours working on calming the man down.
Two rifles, a shotgun and ammunition were seized.

The Acting Station Commander of Sunnyside, Colonel Helen Harmse, expressed relief following the incident.

“The two members must be commended for their heroics,” she added.
