ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula led the party’s campaign in Ward 24, Freedom Park, Soweto, where a by-election is underway following the death of a councilor. The ANC faces competition from the MK Party, EFF, and others, but residents say their biggest concerns are poor living conditions, crime, and unemployment.
Elderly residents, some living in the area for over a decade, lamented high drug abuse, gender-based violence, and inadequate housing. One woman highlighted the struggles of unemployed youth turning to drugs and the dangers faced by women.
On the sidelines, Mbalula addressed internal ANC tensions, dismissing claims of a parliamentary caucus revolt against the party. He also criticized the DA’s latest legal challenge against the Employment Equity Amendment Act.
Additionally, Mbalula confirmed ongoing discussions with the SACP and COSATU over the SACP’s decision to contest the 2026 local elections independently, warning that it could weaken the Tripartite Alliance.
The ANC’s National Working Committee will meet Monday to assess campaign outcomes and discuss economic transformation strategies.
