On 7 June 2019, AfriForum’s Springs neighbourhood watch executed a raid in and around Springs in conjunction with AfriForum’s air support service and the police.

Altogether 12 illegal miners were arrested during the raid and mining equipment was also confiscated. A continued investigation into this type of crime is undertaken by different interested parties to curb criminals in the area.

“AfriForum’s Springs neighbourhood watch is proud to be a part of this safety network that contributes to a safer community,” says Morné Greyling, AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch chairperson in Springs.

“The availability of drones during the planning and execution contributed to a successful raid,” says Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Head of Safety for the Northern region.

“It is an honour to be part of and assist the police in curbing crime – especially after the increase in violent crimes where illegal miners are involved.”
