An Abattoir in the Greater Pretoria area was closed after health inspectors tested meat that was distributed by the abattoir had tested positively for Listeria.

A patient diagnosed with Listeriosis put the inspectors on the track from which the meat was purchased. Further investigation has linked the abattoir to the infected meat.

365 cases of Listeriosis were reported in 2017 with 28 deaths.
