Three people were shot and killed outside a mosque in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, over the weekend, marking another tragic incident in an area long plagued by gang-related violence.
According to reports, three suspects opened fire on a group of nine young men standing near the mosque. The motive remains unclear, but community members suggest the attack may be linked to ongoing gang conflicts.
Police spokesperson Lt. Col. Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that one victim was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Authorities are investigating, but no arrests have been made.
Community in Fear
SABC News reporter Kelvin Jula, who visited the area, described a tense atmosphere, with residents living in constant fear of gun violence. “Young people here say they hear gunshots almost every day,” Jula reported. “They feel trapped—unable to leave but unsafe in their own neighborhood.”
One grieving mother, whose son was among the victims, broke down in tears as she recounted receiving threats just days before the shooting. “Last Monday, I was told my child would be killed,” she said. “I warned him not to go out, but it wasn’t enough.” She alleged that her son was targeted due to alleged gang affiliations, a claim echoed by other locals.
Police Response Under Scrutiny
Residents expressed frustration over what they see as a lack of police intervention. “Police only come after someone has been killed,” the mother said. Community members accuse law enforcement of failing to curb the violence, allowing gangs to operate with impunity.
Eldorado Park has struggled with gang wars for years, with rival groups like the Varas contributing to the cycle of retaliation and bloodshed. Despite occasional police operations, the violence persists, leaving families traumatized and desperate for solutions.
Calls for Action
Local leaders and activists are urging authorities to increase patrols and implement long-term crime prevention strategies. Meanwhile, funerals for the victims are being planned as the community mourns yet another loss.
As investigations continue, residents remain on edge, fearing that without decisive action, more lives will be lost to the relentless violence.
