Operations conducted by Gauteng women in blue and other Law Enforcement Agencies known as “Operation Basadi” resulted in the arrest of three hundred and fourteen suspects, including eighty one suspects linked to crimes against women and children such as rape, attempted rape and child neglect.

One of the suspects arrested in Pretoria North has been linked to more that 20 cases of sexual offences committed since 2011 in Gauteng, Limpopo and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

These operations are supported by Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units as part of a campaign to end the scourge of violence against women and children.

They started on 16 August and will be continuing throughout the month. Some of these operations included roadblocks, stop and search and tracing of wanted suspects.

228 suspects were arrested for assault, 24 for possession of drugs, 12 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 9 for murder. Others were arrested for various crimes including possession of suspected stolen property, housebreaking and theft.

“Women from all law enforcement agencies are demonstrating their engagement and commitment to root out all forms of criminality” says the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange.

Over the weekend, police on routine patrols also seized 18 firearms and arrested 22 while responding to information from the members of the community as well as searching suspicious vehicles in various areas of Gauteng including Jeppe, Hillbrow, Randfontein, Brakpan, Diepsloot, Reigerpark and Orange Farms.

The suspects will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms when they appear in various Magistrate Courts on 21 August 2017.
