On the night of 27 December 2018, at about 23:25 a Drift Reaction cc guard monitoring the CCTV cameras in the guard house noticed movement on the outside of the perimeter fence at a property in Lanseria.
He saw suspects crawling around and immediately alerted the armed tactical officer as well as the control centre who dispatched the Iron Fist Squad, who was in the area at the time, as well as the police. He could not see exactly how many suspects but knew they were more than three.
The Iron Fist Squad members decided to spread out to approach the suspects from the other side. The tactical officer went to the area where the suspects were noticed, got out of his vehicle and took his torch to investigate. Unbeknown to him, seven armed and dangerous suspects were standing not even five meters from him in the dark.
He lifted his torch and they opened fire at him. He returned fire while diving for cover. The Iron Fist Squad members were close by and realised he was in trouble when they saw the muzzle flashes. They made their way towards him and opened fire to provide him with cover. The suspects ran off towards the veld.
The police arrived shortly and started to search for the suspects. One had left his “home-made” balaclava behind, see image at end of article. It was also found that they cut a hole in the fence while they crawled around!
We are not only extremely proud of all our officers who worked as a team but extremely grateful that not one officer sustained any injuries!
This gang is armed, extremely aggressive and brazen and they do not hesitate to shoot. The actions of our men ensured that they did not gain entry onto the property and also ensured that the residents were safe.
