The South African Police Service (SAPS) remains resolute in addressing the proliferation of essential infrastructure related crime as this type crime has a detrimental impact on the economy of the country.
On Monday, 12 December 2022 police in Sedibeng District arrested five suspects in Vanderbijlpark and recovered suspected stolen copper cables found in their possession.
The members of Sedibeng District Operational Command Centre (DOCC), SAPS Barrage and SAPS Evaton reportedly operationalised information they obtained on suspects travelling along the Golden Highway in the direction of Vanderbijlpark.
The suspects’ vehicle was swiftly intercepted by the members which led them to find small pieces of copper wire inside the boot. Further investigation led the members to a nearby scrapyard and it was established that the suspects had sold copper cables to the scrapyard.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ court soon.
Police in Gauteng in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders are intensifying its compliance inspections at second hand dealers and scrapyards across the province.
