Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, praised a team of law enforcement agencies that worked together, with diligence, to apprehend suspects who were found with three reported hijacked vehicles in Wattville, Ekurhuleni.

The four suspects were arrested on Sunday, 12 February 2023, after they were found in possession of three vehicles that were reported stolen in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces.

On Sunday, 12 February 2023, police received information about suspects who were in possession of hijacked motor vehicles. The team consisting of South African Police Service Highway Patrol Unit, Johannesburg Metro Police Department K9, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Special Task Team, RTMC and Guerilla Tactical Service operationalised the information.

The information led the team to a house in Wattville, Ekurhuleni, where three suspects were found while trying to remove the tracking device from the Renault Kwid which was hijacked in Vosman, Mpumalanga Province, early this month.

It is reported that the lawful owner of the vehicle was shot during the hijacking and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The team found another vehicle on the premises, a white Chevrolet utility bakkie. Upon inspecting the vehicle, it was established that it was hijacked Jane Furse, Limpopo Province, in 2021.

While busy at the scene, a white VW Caddy arrived at the scene, driven by one male. The car was checked and it was found to have been hijacked in Norkem Park, Gauteng Province, in 2022.

All four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of hijacked motor vehicles. They are expected to appear at Benoni Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 14 February 2023.
