300 minibus taxis, which were not fit to be on the road, were impounded and 20 drivers arrested in Johannesburg.

At least 300 minibus taxis, which were not fit to be on the road, were impounded and 20 drivers arrested on Friday morning during “Operation Ke Molao” which means “it’s the law”, metro police said.

The taxis were travelling along the Soweto Highway and Mentz road in Booysens, South of Johannesburg, when they were pulled over by metro cops and found to be unfit to be on the road.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said during the joint operation involving all Traffic Law Enforcement Departments in Gauteng, fraudulent professional driving permits and license discs were uncovered.

He said the operation was focused at reducing road fatalities and bad driver behavior.

“We are calling for the co-operation from motorists as well as commuters who may get affected during the operation as the aim is to save lives,” said Minnaar. He added that the operation was being carried out in different areas in Gauteng.

“The operation will continue until there is marked improvement in driver behavior,” he said.
