Two male accused charged with illegal dealing in drugs were remanded in custody following their apprehension on Saturday, 14 May in Midrand.

Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston followed up on intelligence related to suspicious drug dealings in the Midrand area. Upon arrival at a positively identified residential complex, Waterfall Ridge Apartments in Midrand, authorities pounced on the accused, Ally Khalfani Habibu (32) and Nasibu Salum Shaban (33) ready to leave the premises for distribution.

The investigation team searched the accused’s immobile vehicle, a Silver Mercedes Benz and found readily packaged suspected heroin weighing 1.8 kilogram.

Further search conducted with the West Rand and Benoni K9 resulted to a recovery of compressed 20 kilograms of dagga inside a box on the backseat.

The pair was immediately placed under arrest and subsequently charged. Habibu and Shaban appeared in the Alexandra Regional Court and were remanded in custody pending investigation.

Authorities confiscated narcotics with an estimated street value of R850 000-00 as well as electronic gadgets for further investigation.

The case against the alleged drug dealers is postponed to Tuesday, 24 May for their legal status in South Africa. Their formal bail application matter is to be considered at a later stage.

Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the Provincial Head of the Hawks commended the investigation team’s swift response in apprehending the accused and removing more drugs in the streets of Gauteng.
