Twelve members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with the 2023 murder of Hawks investigator Lieutenant-Colonel Frans Mathipa. The suspects face multiple charges, including murder, kidnapping, and fraud.
Arrests and Investigation
The case took a significant turn over the weekend when two suspects, aged 36 and 51, were arrested in separate operations—one at OR Tambo International Airport and another in Centurion. According to Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Singo of the Hawks, the remaining ten suspects voluntarily handed themselves over to authorities in Johannesburg earlier today.
Mathipa was gunned down in August 2023 while driving on the N1 highway in Hammanskraal. At the time, he was on duty investigating a sensitive case. His vehicle veered off the road during the shooting, leading to his death.
Court Proceedings and Bail Opposition
The case has been postponed to July 1, 2025, for further investigation and a potential bail application. The state has indicated it will oppose bail, citing the sensitivity of the case.
“The investigation is still ongoing, and we cannot reveal the identities of the accused at this stage,” said Singo. “Further details will be disclosed once the investigation is concluded.”
From Two to Twelve Suspects
Initially, only two suspects were in custody, but the Hawks confirmed that the additional ten suspects surrendered this morning. Authorities have not yet clarified the exact roles each individual played in the alleged crimes.
Ongoing Developments
As the case unfolds, more details are expected to emerge when the accused return to court next week. The Hawks, along with tactical operations teams, continue to probe the circumstances surrounding Mathipa’s killing.
For now, the twelve SANDF members remain in custody as the legal process moves forward.
