FREE STATE — A Zastron rape suspect is scheduled to appear before the Zastron Magistrate’s Court following a violent, knife-point abduction and sexual assault at a local sports ground. The arrest of the 29-year-old man stems from a terrifying late-night ordeal that has prompted swift action from regional law enforcement.
According to Police Spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba, the harrowing incident occurred on Friday, 31 July 2026, at approximately 23:00. The 24-year-old victim, a resident of the Itumeleng Section in Matlakeng, Zastron, was walking home when he passed a bottle store in Kgotsong, Matlakeng, Zastron.
As the victim walked, a man suddenly emerged from the darkness and threatened him with a knife. The assailant forced the victim to accompany him to the Lere-La-Thuto Sports Ground in Kanana Location, Zastron. Ledwaba stated that the suspect held the weapon against the victim’s throat, explicitly threatening to stab him if he made any noise during the abduction.
Upon reaching the sports ground, the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted the victim. Fortunately, passersby were nearby, allowing the victim to cry out for help and successfully flee the scene. Although the suspect attempted to chase the fleeing victim, he was ultimately unsuccessful in recapturing him.
Authorities confirmed that the attacker is known to the victim. During the violent encounter, the victim sustained physical trauma, specifically suffering a bite injury and a knife-inflicted laceration.
Following the incident, the 29-year-old suspect, a resident of New Location in Matlakeng, Zastron, was tracked down and arrested by law enforcement. He will now face formal charges of rape in the Zastron Magistrate’s Court as the judicial process begins.
