A police Sergeant stationed in Welkom SAPS was arrested after he and his friends extorted R30 000-00 from a suspect in Bothaville.
It was back in February 2020 when the police Sergeant and his unknown number of friends accompanied by a female, arrived at a complainant’s house alleging that they are aware of his criminal activities and they are sent to arrest him.
They made him an offer to pay R30 000-00 so as to evade arrest.
The complainant reported the matter to the police and the Provincial Organised Crime Task Team was mobilized to investigate. After substantial evidence was gathered, the 43-year-old Sergeant was arrested.
The 43-year-old Sergeant was arrested on 5 August 2021 and appeared in Welkom Magistrate Court for extortion. He is remanded in custody till the 18 August 2021 where he will make an application for bail.
