FREE STATE — Law enforcement officials have dealt a significant blow to the underground tobacco trade after the Welkom K9 Unit seized illicit cigarettes valued at an estimated R1.2 million during a targeted highway interception. The bust, which unfolded on the R30 between Welkom and Odendaalsrus, resulted in the arrest of a foreign national and the confiscation of a vehicle packed with counterfeit goods.
Interception on the R30 Corridor
During routine crime-combating patrols on Thursday, 6 August 2026, at roughly 09:10, officers from the Welkom K9 Unit noticed a suspicious white Toyota minibus navigating the R30 route. Acting on their observations, the specialized unit intercepted the vehicle. Upon stopping the minibus, officers requested and received permission to conduct a thorough search of the premises. Inside, they uncovered multiple crates containing suspected counterfeit goods, prompting a deeper investigation into the cargo.
A Massive Counterfeit Haul
Following preliminary investigations, authorities confirmed that the seized cargo was indeed counterfeit tobacco products. Police confiscated a total of 89 master crates containing the illicit cigarettes, which carry an estimated street value of R1.2 million. In addition to the massive haul of contraband, the white Toyota minibus—allegedly used as the primary transport to facilitate the commission of the crime—was also impounded and seized by the state.
Charges and Pending Court Appearance
The 35-year-old foreign national traveling in the vehicle was immediately taken into custody. He has been formally arrested on multiple charges, including the possession of suspected counterfeit goods and the contravention of the Immigration Act. The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon to face the allegations.
