In an ongoing operation to rid the Free State of the zama-zamas and their criminal activities led to the arrest of 43-year-old suspect on Tuesday in Riebeeckstad, Welkom.
The Hawks swooped on a residence where the suspect was alleged to be residing and found man and a lady who claimed she was just the housekeeper. The man was found in the house and was positively linked to illegal mining activities in the area.
The members continued, searched the house and discovered about R600 000 in cash and he was arrested.
The cash was confiscated and the legal status of the suspect is under investigation. The suspect will be appearing in the Welkom Magistrates Court on Thursday facing charges according to the Prevention of Organised Crimes (POCA) Act.
