A police Sergeant attached to Viljoenskroon SAPS sustained serious injuries and a suspect lost his life while attending a domestic violence related complaint in Viljoenskroon on Wednesday, 2 March 2022.

This follows a complaint that was attended by the two members, Sgt Frans Pieterse and Const Paseka Maseko at about 08:00 in Evans Park, Rammulotsi, Viljoenskroon.

On arrival a male suspect was approached and he allegedly attacked the police with a knife. During the attack, Sgt Pieterse was stabbed on the neck and on the shoulder blade.

Members of Crime Prevention were activated and on arrival, they found the suspect still battling with Sgt Pieterse. He continued to stab Sgt Pieterse on the lower abdomen. He then attacked every member that was around.

Live ammunition was used to stop the suspect as he showed no intention to stop after pepper spray and other means were applied on him. The suspect was shot on the right arm and lower abdomen.

He was certified dead on the scene by the emergency personnel who later arrived at the crime scene. Sgt Pieterse was transferred to a medical facility in Kroonstad for further medical attention where he is in a critical but stable condition.

The deceased is Thapelo Aaron Ntjato, a 21-year-old son of the complainant who went to the police station in the early hours of the morning to complain about his son’s bad violent behaviour that they endured throughout the night. The father complained that he was using the knife to threaten them.

Case dockets of attempted murder and murder were opened for further investigation with IPID taking a murder docket.

Acting District Commissioner of Fezile Dabi District Brig Mapulane Mbeloane called on community members to refrain from attacking police officials.
