Members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s (Hawks) Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and Priority Crime Specialised Investigation have secured a forfeiture order against a convicted fraudster and her boyfriend. The order was granted by the Free State High Court sitting in Bloemfontein on 31 August 2023. It relates to a vehicle purchased with proceeds of a crime committed by the pair.
Thandeka Mlangeni (35), who was then a teller at a reputable bank in Harrismith, fraudulently transferred R1 million rand from a client’s account into her boyfriend’s. A further R51 000 in cash was withdrawn. This occurred between January and February 2020.
Mlangeni was sentenced to an effective 10 years’ imprisonment in May this year for fraud, money laundering, assisting another to benefit from the proceeds of crime, and contravention of the Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002. The boyfriend, Mpandulo Daguma (34), is serving 15 years’.
A 2017 model Ford Figo was confirmed as having been purchased with money stolen by Mlangeni. Working closely with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Hawks investigators have ensured that this vehicle is forfeited to the State.
