The Vala Umgodi operation, in collaboration with mine security, has achieved major successes in combating illicit mining and the distribution of counterfeit goods through coordinated multidisciplinary operations in Odendaalsrus, Wepener, and Dewetsdorp.

Clandestine Mining Operation Uncovered in Odendaalsrus

In the early hours of Tuesday, 15 July 2025, at approximately 04:00, a Vala Umgodi combat team, working alongside mine security, disrupted an illegal mining operation near Odendaalsrus. During a routine patrol, officers surprised a group of suspects who fled in different directions upon spotting law enforcement.

One suspect, aged 34, was apprehended at the scene. Authorities seized two industrial water pumps used in the illicit operation. Through further investigation, six additional suspects—aged between 22 and 52—were arrested in connection with illegal mining activities.
