Daniel Mafute Mokubung was sentenced by the Sasolburg Reigonal Court for the rape and kidnapping of a 32-year-old woman.

On 16 May 2021 at about 00:00 the 32-year-old victim was from her friend’s house on her way home alone in Zamdela and came across an unknown man who stopped her, demanding money and her cellphone.

Suddenly, the suspect took the victim to a nearby park and forcefully undressed her. He proceeded to rape the victim several times and passed her to his friend Tumelo Monyane, aged 20. Monyane took her to a nearby house and raped her near the toilet. A neighbour who happened to be the suspect’s friend, named Katleho, who passed on, helped the victim by telling her the name of the suspect and reporting the matter to the victim’s brother and the police.

The case was investigated by Sergeant Mazibuko of the Zamdela Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses Unit. It continued only with Tumelo Monyane and he was sentenced in September 2023 to 20 years of direct imprisonment.

After his sentence, Mokubung’s DNA came back positive and he was charged while in prison, as he was already sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment in another rape case that took place in 2022. With the guidance of the prosecutor, Mrs Maras, Mokubung was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and kidnapping by the Sasolburg Reginal court.

The victim never knew Mokubung and couldn’t point him out, but the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory played a vital role in linking the accused to these crimes.
