On Sunday, December 22, 2024, at approximately 09:00, Provincial Inspectors Montoeli and Moses-Mqekelana were conducting a roadside checkpoint on the N1 South of Bloemfontein. During the inspection, they stopped a truck tractor with two trailers.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, the officers heard suspicious sounds coming from the rear trailer. After instructing the driver to open the curtain side, they discovered 47 adult passengers and 4 children aged between 9 months and 5 years, being transported unsafely in the rear trailer.
The officers escorted the truck to a nearby filling station, where the passengers were instructed to disembark. The police were contacted, and upon searching the passengers, 28 individuals (2 females and 26 males) were found to be illegal immigrants from Lesotho. They were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act.
The truck driver was charged with transporting passengers for reward without an operating license. The vehicle was impounded and is currently being held at the traffic impound center.
MEC Jabu Mbalula hereby issues a strong warning to truck operators,
“We advise truck operators to constantly monitor their vehicles to prevent such illegal operations by drivers. Vigilance is crucial in preventing these types of incidents and ensuring the safety of all road users, “he says.
This successful operation demonstrates the dedication of traffic officers in enforcing road safety regulations and combating illegal activities.
