A joint intelligence operation has resulted in the arrest of three suspects after they were disrupted before they could set off explosives that were already loaded in an ATM at Gelukwaarts on Sunday 1 september 2019.
The team comprising of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime investigation unit, Bomb disposal Unit, K9 and LCRC apprehended the suspects whilst they were trying to get away from the scene. Two get away vehicles were seized whilst a third sped off and was found in nearby Maokeng loaded with explosives, detonators, blow torches and crowbars.
The Hawks investigation continue whilst the suspects are expected to appear in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s on Tuesday 3 september 2019, charged for contravening the Explosives Act and malicious damage to property.
