Theunissen armed robbery foiled, 3 arrested

On 28 June 2023 at about 17:00 members of Welkom Tactical Response Team (TRT) was informed by Crime Intelligence about a planned armed robbery in Theunissen.

The information was operationalised by Welkom TRT and a white Toyota RAV4 with North West registration numbers with African males which was spotted at Caltex filling station at Theunissen.

The vehicle was intercepted tactically and three occupants were thoroughly searched as well as the vehicle.

Two firearms (CZ P99 pistol with serial number clearly visible with a magazine and 16 live ammunitions and PX4 Storm pistol, magazine with seven live ammunitions) were found hidden inside the air filter box in the engine compartment.

The three suspects from Stilfontein and Orkney aged 29, 44 and 45 years were arrested for possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunitions and a Toyota RAV4 were seized for further investigation.

The suspects will appear on 3 July 2023 in Theunissen Magistrates’ Court.

The Acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi would like to appreciate residents of Theunissen for giving SAPS members this sensitive information about a planned armed robbery which was thwarted. Members of Crime Intelligence and Welkom TRT were applauded for excellent work done. This will send a clear cut message to criminals that residents are sick and tired of criminality in their space.
