Thabong tavern shooting leaves 1 dead, 4 injured

Members of Thabong Visible Policing were busy with their crime prevention duties when they were summoned to a shooting incident at a tavern on Saturday, 1 July 2023 at about 22:14.

Upon arrival, a male was found lying on his back with a gunshot wound in his abdomen. He was identified by his brother as Neo Malobehla (22).

There were other victims who sustained gunshot wounds and were admitted in one of the hospitals in Goldfields precinct.

The Station Commander of Thabong, Brigadier Envor Solomon activated a 72-hour plan to trace and arrest the suspects and the team comprised of Thabong Detective Services, Crime Intelligence, Serious and Violent Crimes Task Team and Visible Policing.

After a joint operation, working around the clock, resulted in the arrest of two suspects, aged 25 and 30 on Monday, 3 July 2023 at about 14:00.

The two suspects were charged with murder and four counts of attempted murder and they are set to appear on in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 5 July 2023.

Two additional suspects are still at large and the manhunt continues. The case has been assigned to Provincial Anti-Gang Unit for further investigation.
