Law enforcement officials arrested a 35-year-old male suspect on Tuesday, 02 June 2026, following the recovery of suspected illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R7.5 million. The interception occurred on the N1 highway near Vaal Plaza.

The suspect was taken into custody on charges of possession of suspected illicit cigarettes. Authorities also seized the Isuzu truck used to transport the goods as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Parys Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face formal charges related to the possession of suspected illicit tobacco products.

This operation forms part of broader efforts to combat illicit trade in South Africa, as highlighted by the #StopIllicitTrade initiative. Authorities continue to urge the public to report suspicious activities related to the transportation or sale of untaxed or unregulated goods.

Further details regarding the investigation will be released following the suspect’s court appearance.
