Swift police action leads to the arrest of a male and the recovery of a hijacked vehicle.
On Monday 24 February 2025 at about 10:00 members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit were stopped by an unknown African male who was in a state of shock and informed the members that he had just been hijacked at gunpoint by a tall African male.
While the victim was assisted to register a hijacking case at the Thabong Police Station, members quickly set out to intercept the vehicle. A lookout was issued for the hijacked vehicle in the Thabong and Welkom area.
At about 10:55 the hijacked vehicle was spotted being driven by a male fitting the description near the R.H Matjhabeng Hospital. The vehicle was intercepted and tactically approached by the members; the suspect, who was also the driver, was arrested and the vehicle was recovered.
The suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen vehicle, which will be linked to a case of hijacking & pointing of a firearm incident that happened in Thabong. He will appear in the Welkom magistrate court soon.
