FREE STATE — Authorities are investigating the tragic murder of a Vredefort father after his 32-year-old son was taken into police custody. The suspect allegedly killed his 61-year-old parent following a heated domestic dispute, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The incident unfolded on Sunday, 2 August 2026, when law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence in the Mapetla Section of Mokwallo. Vredefort police spokespersons confirmed that they received an emergency complaint regarding a severe domestic assault at approximately 16:10 that afternoon.

Upon arriving at the home, officers discovered the victim, identified as Mr. Ndode Lenong, lying on a bed. He was suffering from severe head trauma and significant facial swelling. According to Vredefort police spokespersons, preliminary evidence at the scene indicated that Mr. Lenong had been attacked by his own son, who allegedly wielded an unidentified object during the confrontation.

A Trivial Dispute Turns Deadly

Investigators revealed a startling motive behind the brutal attack. Vredefort police spokespersons stated that the fatal altercation reportedly stemmed from a heated argument between the father and son over a single cigarette prior to the physical assault.

Emergency medical personnel rushed the 61-year-old victim to Parys Hospital for immediate stabilization. Due to the severity of his head injuries, he was subsequently transferred to a specialized medical facility in Bloemfontein for advanced trauma care.

Despite the extensive medical intervention, Vredefort police spokespersons reported that Mr. Lenong tragically succumbed to his wounds the following morning. His time of death was recorded at approximately 09:10 on Monday, 3 August 2026.

Suspect in Custody

Following the victim’s passing, the investigation was officially upgraded to a homicide case. The 32-year-old suspect was apprehended without incident at his home and formally charged with murder.

Vredefort police spokespersons confirmed that the accused remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Vredefort Magistrate’s Court soon, where he will formally face the charges related to his father’s death. Authorities have not released further details regarding the specific object used in the assault as the docket remains active.
