Selling uncut diamonds: Wepener man arrested in sting operation

A 40-year-old suspect was arrested in Wepener on Thursday 7 July 2022, by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Bloemfontein for dealing and unlawfully possessing of an uncut diamond.

Information was received by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation about a suspect who is having diamonds and wanted to sell them.

A sting operation was conducted where the police arranged with the suspect to buy the diamonds. The suspect then told the police officer that he has only one diamond and he is selling it for R15 000-00.

The police officer then told the suspect that he does not have R15 000-00, he can only give him R3 000-00 and the balance will be settled on Saturday.

The suspect agreed to the offer and met with the police officer and at the meeting point the suspect gave the police officer the diamond who then arrested him.

The suspect will appear before the Wepener Magistrates’ court on Monday, 11 July 2022.
