Sasolburg hijackings, 6 suspects arrested

Members of the Provincial Organised Crime deployed in Fezile Dabi District led by Sergeant Tauru Majoe, Sasolburg Detectives, members from the Department of Traffic and Private Security companies arrested 6 suspects on Thursday, 07 July 2022 at about 15:34 at Sasolburg.

It is alleged that the members were on-duty when they received intelligence driven information of a truck being hijacked on the R59 towards R57 off-ramp. Upon arrival, they found the truck driver being accompanied by the members from the Department of Traffic. The 4 suspects aged between 18 and 40 who were not successful on their mission had already fled on foot.

A search ensued and 1 suspect was found hiding in a small dam. The remaining 3 suspects were found hiding in the bushes. All 4 suspects were arrested.

Upon further investigation it was discovered that there were 2 more suspects said to be part of the arrested suspects. These suspects, 1 woman and a male were caught driving a Silver Mercedes Benz near a shopping complex in Vaalpark.

All 6 suspects have been arrested and will appear before the Sasolburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 11 July 2022. They will be charged with hijacking and contravention of the Immigration Act.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane commended the team and the apprehension of the suspects. She further strongly praised the hard work and commitment of all the role players in securing the arrests.

“Hijackings have been a pain for this District. It is high time we show these suspects that they cannot do as they please. We are surely stamping the authority of the state,” concluded Lt General Motswenyane.
