Rape of Hoopstad woman, ex-boyfriend handed life sentence

On 13 October 2019, a 29-year-old woman visited her boyfriend and shortly after her ex-boyfriend arrived, he attacked her current boyfriend.

He ran to Hoopstad Police Station to report the incident. The ex-boyfriend forcefully took the victim to his place of residence where she was raped. She reported the incident to the police the following day.

The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Ntomzoto Selemogo attached to the FCS Unit and he managed to arrest the 40-year-old suspect. He was found guilty as charged by Hoopstad Regional Court.

On the 30 November 2021, Pheello Johannes Daki was sentenced as follows:

Life sentence for rape, two years for assault and twelve months on Contravention of Court Order.

The District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Major General Lerato Molale welcomed the harsh sentencing imposed on the rapist. We hope this heavy sentence will serve as a deterrent to all would-be rapists especially as we are observing 16 Days of Activism for no violence Against Women and Children. He further commended the sterling investigation conducted by Detective Sergeant Selemogo who secured the harsh sentencing.
