Rape and strangulation of elderly women, accused gets four life terms

Mathlomola Solomon Matsau (30) will spend the remaining years of his life in prison after he was sentenced to four life terms by the High Court in Bloemfontein. This follows three incidents where he attacked elderly women in 2017 and 2018 respectively. He would gain entrance through breaking windows of his victim’s houses.

In the first incident in 2017 he assaulted a 73 year old woman, raped and strangled her to death in her house. In 2018, he assaulted an 80 year old victim before raping and strangling her.

Again in 2018, he pounced on a 60 year old blind woman and attempted to rape her. The victim managed to grab a knife and stabbed him. Failing to continue with his mission, the accused stole the victim’s groceries before fleeing the scene.

Warrant Officer William Leboea of the Serial Electronic Crime Investigation unit (SECI) took over the investigation and managed to link the accused in all three cases through DNA.

He was sentenced on Friday 13 September 2019, to four (4) life terms, two for 2 counts of rape and two for 2 counts of murder, then 7 years for attempted rape and 2 years for theft of groceries.
