A sharp-eyed police operation led to the seizure of nearly 3,000 Mandrax tablets destined for Tom Swarts Street in Heidedal, near Bloemfontein. The arrest followed the vigilance of members of the Public Order Policing Unit, who spotted a known drug peddler driving a white Chevrolet Utility bakkie along the R30 road towards Bloemfontein.
Acting on suspicion, authorities mobilized a K9 patrol unit to monitor possible routes the suspect could take to reach Heidedal. The team, consisting of Warrant Officer JJ September, Sergeant TM Phoko, Constable MF Duiker, and Constable TP Ramaru, swiftly responded.
The suspicious vehicle was intercepted at the R30-Glen crossroads, where officers conducted a search. Their trained instincts drew attention to the screws on a sound speaker behind the passenger seat, which appeared to have been frequently tampered with. Upon unscrewing the black speaker box, police discovered three transparent plastic bags filled with Mandrax tablets hidden inside.
The 41-year-old suspect was immediately arrested. Police counted a total of 2,968 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R148,400 in his presence.
A case of dealing in drugs has been opened at the Glen Police Station, and the suspect is set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court today, Friday, 16 May 2025.
This successful operation highlights the critical role of police experience and coordination in combating drug trafficking in the region.
