Members attached to Operation “Vala Umgodi” have arrested six suspects for possession of gold-bearing material and illicit mining equipment.
On Tuesday 12 March 2024 at about 10:45, members of Operation Vala Umgodi conducted operations focussing on illicit mining around Virginia.
While at one of the mines, six suspects aged between 20 and 35, were arrested at a farm on the outskirts of Virginia for possession of possible gold-bearing material worth an estimated R800 000, possession of possible gold processing equipment and contravention of the Immigration Act.
All suspects will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
