WELKOM – Project Doper was launched in 2022 aimed at addressing troublesome drug syndicates operating in Odendaalsrus and Welkom Policing precincts. The project was operationalised from 09:00 on 10 August 2023 by the Provincial Organized Crime, Welkom and Thabong Crime Intelligence, Crime Intelligence Surveillance Unit, Provincial Tracking Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit, Flying Squad, Lejweleputswa DOCC, Welkom LCRC, Welkom and Ladybrand K9 Units.
A total of 16 cases of Dealing in drugs and one case of possession of drugs were registered against the arrested suspects including a kingpin of drug dealers in Welkom. During the arrest of the kingpin, drugs which consisted of Mandrax tablets, Crystal Meth and CAT with the street value of more than R320 000-00 were seized. Two vehicles used in the commission of crime, digital weighing scale used to weigh drugs, an undisclosed amount of cash and unknown amount of Kruger rands were also confiscated.
Two males aged 34 and 42 and a female were arrested. The suspects are facing charges of dealing in drugs and possession of drugs. More charges may be added. The trio will appear on the 14 August 2023 in the Welkom Magistrate Court.
