A 38-year-old male suspect, allegedly involved in the murder of an elderly man on a farm in Rouxville in the Free State, appeared in the Smithfield Magistrate Court.

The 38-year-old Armand Opperman appeared in court on 17 May 2023, on charges of murder, theft of firearms and a vehicle and will remain in custody.

His court appearance comes after the lifeless body of Mr. Lance Arthur Da Silva (62) was found with a gunshot wound in the main bedroom on a farm in the Rouxville District on Thursday, 4 May 2023 at about 14:30.

Opperman, who was allegedly living with the deceased on the farm, was on the run and was arrested in Gqeberha the following day. He first appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate Court, after which he was transferred to the Free State to appear on the relevant charges.

The case was postponed to 22 May 2023 where he will reappear in the Rouxville Magistrate Court for legal representation and further investigations.

He remains in custody.
