Murder: 12 Maroma gang members sentenced, 9 get life, Bloemfontein

Members of the notorious Maroma gang were, on 19 september 2019, sentenced by the High Court in Bloemfontein. Nine accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, three years for the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA Act) and another three years for defeating the ends of justice.

The other three accused were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murder plus 3 years for the contravention of the POCA Act and another three years for defeating the ends of justice.

The incident happened on the 5 August 2017, where the deceased Mpho Phuroe (25) was sitting with his wife at their house in Sejake Square at about 23:00. The three accused who were known to the deceased asked him to accompany them to go and smoke. On arrival at the shack he was accosted by a group of Maroma gang members including those who fetched him.

They stabbed him with sharp objects then wrapped his body with a blanket and burnt him at an open space near factories.

Police were alerted by a passer-by who saw smoke near the factories. The case was handed over to Provincial Organised Crime Unit who worked hard to ensure a successful conviction. The family of the deceased was in court during the sentence and expressed their appreciation to police and NPA.
