Members of Public Order Policing who were off-duty received a tip-off about an alleged drug dealer selling drugs to children in the Dagbreek suburb of Welkom. He resisted arrest but was overpowered and arrested with drugs and thousands of Rands in his possession. He will apply for bail soon.

On Friday, the 3 March 2023 at about 18:30, an off-duty SAPS member received information about an African male person selling drugs to children at the Dagbreek Shopping Complex in Welkom.

The member walked to the shopping complex as it was not far from his residence. He noticed an unknown man exchanging what was suspected to be drugs with two young boys.

The same person matched the description given to him. He called for backup from his colleague, who responded instantly.

The two members approached the man and introduced themselves to him as police officers. The man tried to flee and also resisted the arrest, but he was overpowered and arrested.

In his possession, they found a big zip-lock bag containing loose dagga, full Mandrax tablets, halved Mandrax tablets, a plastic bag containing Crystal Meth drugs, quarters of Mandrax tablets and cash.

The 30-year-old suspect, Ivan Mofokeng, appeared in the Welkom Magistrate Court facing charges of dealing in drugs and resisting arrest. The case was postponed till the 13 March 2023 for bail application.

The Acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi applauded these members of Public Order Policing who were off-duty. “You ensured that the alleged drug dealer was arrested while selling drugs to children,” said Brigadier Mojafi.
