Life sentences for Free State killers

The Bethulie High Court in the Free State has sentenced two men, aged 19 and a 26, to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a 21-year-old woman, provincial police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Yanga Ngcukana said the woman was followed home from a tavern by Mzuvukile Manyenye Magwa, 26, and Xolisile Skutwana, 19, who managed to gain entry to her residence.

“They both took turns raping the victim before she was strangled and killed,” Ngcukana said.

Ngcukana said the half naked lifeless body of the woman was discovered by her father the following morning when he got to her house.

“Investigations by FCS led to the arrest of four suspects but the other two were later acquitted as there were no linkages to this case. The other two were linked through DNA.”

The sentences were handed down on Friday.

Free State Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Lebeoana Tsumane, welcomed the sentencing and commended the investigating officer, Warrant Elizabeth Pretorius, for a thorough investigation that secured a maximum jail term for the two accused.
