
KOFFIEFONTEIN — Authorities have initiated a formal police inquest following a fatal shack fire in the Nuwe Erwe neighborhood of Koffiefontein that claimed the life of an unidentified man early Monday morning.
The emergency response was triggered at approximately 03:30 on 22 June 2026, when law enforcement received reports of a residential structure engulfed in flames. The burning dwelling was situated in close proximity to a local crèche.
Upon reaching the scene, responding officers found the shack completely consumed by the blaze. To combat the fire, a specialized fire truck from a local mining operation was dispatched to the location and successfully extinguished the flames.
During the aftermath of the extinguishment, responders discovered a male individual lying in the vicinity of the shack’s entrance. The man was suffering from severe burn injuries. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) teams arrived promptly to assess the victim but were ultimately forced to pronounce him deceased at the scene.
The deceased’s remains were subsequently transported by Forensic Pathology services. An official post-mortem examination is currently pending, the results of which will facilitate the formal confirmation of the victim’s identity.
Meanwhile, investigators are working to determine the exact origin of the blaze. The cause of the fire currently remains unknown, and the police inquest docket remains active as the probe continues.
