Hijacked traffic officer jumps from moving state vehicle

On the morning of 23 February 2018, at about 6:30 a traffic officer who was on duty at R57 near Heilbron attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding and the driver failed to stop. He followed the vehicle and spotted it on the R34 road towards Petrus Steyn.

Upon realising that they were being followed, the suspects sped off and lost control of the vehicle.

The traffic officer stopped to assist and three armed men alighted from the vehicle and pointed the officer with firearms. They took his firearm and forced him into his state vehicle and drove off.

The traffic officer managed to jump out of the moving vehicle and sustained minor injuries. The suspects abandoned the state vehicle on the R59 road near Zamdela after being picked up by a white BMW.

The suspect’s vehicle, a Ford Focus was circulated and found to have been reported stolen at Sunnyside in 2017. The registration number on the vehicle matched that of another Ford Focus in a garage in Witbank. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects should contact Detective Warrant Officer Leon De Klerk at 072 484 9046 or 016- 974 6117.
