The Hawks’ National Bureau of Illegal Firearm Control and Priority Violence Crime (NBIFCPVC), assisted by members of SAPS Welkom Firearms, Liquor and Second Hand Goods has seized a number of illegal firearms and arrested a 65-year-old gun shop owner.
The intelligence led operation commenced on Wednesday where the owner allegedly sold three illegal firearms meant for illegal miners. Following the sting operation and his subsequent arrest, the team searched the suspect’s business premises in Currie House, Welkom for more illegal firearms. On Thursday the team continued with the operation and seized a large quantity of firearms for examination to determine whether they were used in a commission of other crimes.
The suspect is expected to make his first appearance today at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court facing charges of dealing and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. Investigations continue.
