Free State rapist sentenced to life behind bars

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to life behind bars for taking part in the gang rape of a 20-year-old woman four years ago, Free State police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said the Welkom Magistrate’s Court sentenced Tankiso Johannes Molelejane to life imprisonment for the 2012 rape.

The woman was attacked in the early hours of December 7, 2012, while walking home with her boyfriend in Tabong. Four men attacked them, but the boyfriend managed to escape.

“The suspects assaulted the girlfriend, robbed her two cellphones and clothes and took turns in raping her. A case of rape and robbery was registered for further investigations. All of the suspects were unknown to her.”

Thakeng said DNA test results were completed in January 2016, linking Molelejane to the rape.

“The suspect has already been convicted for another rape case and he was already serving his 10 year sentence,” he said.

The other three suspects remain at large.
