Free State police seek help in catching hijacking suspects

Sasolburg police on Thursday said they were on the hunt for two suspects alleged to have taken a white Toyota Hilux bakkie during a hijacking and were calling on the public to assist in the search.

The incident took place on May 20 as the 30-year-old complainant was en route from Sasolburg in the Free State to Germiston in Gauteng.

The victim pulled over, with the aim to urinate on the side of the road, when a white Golf pulled up behind the victim’s bakkie.

Two men were believed to have exited the Golf and approached the victim, who was still seated inside of the bakkie. According to police, one of the suspects lifted his jacket to expose a firearm while the other suspect instructed the victim to open the bakkie’s doors.

The second suspect told the victim that if he made any noise or tried to attract any attention to them, he would be shot.

“The complainant was forced into the boot of the Golf and he was later dropped at Zuurbekom in Western Area, Gauteng,” said Free State police’s Captain Livhuhani Hani.

“The vehicle was later recovered in Kibler Park by community patrollers.”

Identikits have now been released of the suspects. Both suspects are estimated to be between the ages of 30 and 35 and are both believed to be about 1.6 metres tall.
