The Lesotho government has for several years owed the Free State Department of Health millions for providing Lesotho citizens with medical treatment in the province.
During a meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Health in the Free State Legislature, the Department indicated that the neighbouring country currently owes it R61 million.
For the 2020/21 financial year, the debt that Lesotho owes the province amounts to more than R29 million.
The FF Plus asked the MEC for Health in the Free State, Montseng Tsiu, in writing in the Legislature, what the Department is doing to collect the outstanding debt from Lesotho.
The MEC was also requested to confirm whether there exists an agreement between the Department and Lesotho to treat its patients and if so, to indicate what the agreement entails.
The ANC’s poor handling of Covid-19 and its poor management in general have seriously knee-haltered the already struggling healthcare services in the province.
The people of the Free State cannot afford to have their healthcare services affected by another country’s outstanding debt.
Treating other countries’ patients with South Africans’ tax money is not acceptable and must not be tolerated.
