Fraud: Matjhabeng municipality fleet manager in Welkom court

On 16 November 2021, the Hawks’ National Clean Audit Task Team members arrested the senior manager at the Matjhabeng local municipality, Makuorane Joseph Molawo (50) on fraud-related charges.

He appeared in the Welkom District Court where he was released on a R5000 bail.

It is alleged that the late municipal manager fraudulently appointed Molawo as the senior manager for Fleet Logistics and Maintenance within the municipality.

The post was never advertised, it did not exist with the organisational structure and the accused used fraudulent senior certificates.

Molawo’s salary was adjusted to more than R153 000 over his salary from January 2020 to May 2021. The discrepancies were discovered by the current municipal manager who reported the matter to the Hawks for investigation.

The accused was charged with fraud, uttering, forgery and money laundering.

The case was postponed to 17 January 2022 at the Special Commercial Crime Court in Virginia
